On Sunday, June 19 (Father’s Day), we dropped off our 10 year old little girl at Camp Allegheny for a week long sleep away camp. We did our research and asked all the questions and we felt very conformable knowing that she would be safe at a camp that has been around for 95 years! We were happy to see Mom’s there who attended the camp as teenagers and that their mom’s and daughters have also attended the camp. We said our good-byes confident that she would have the time of her life! Little did we know what by Thursday Mother Nature would put the camp and all the campers in the middle of one of the worst floods that West Virginia has seen. My little girl was one valley over from White Sulfur Springs and The Greenbriar Resort where they suffered horrible devastation and loss. Thankfully, the counselors at camp kept their cool and the girls were none the wiser. They enjoyed the all camp sleepover in the Play House and had lots of fun singing, playing in the mud, and enjoying the company of their new friends. The Greenbriar River was so swollen and moving very fast that camp pick up was delayed 24 hours and the next group of campers are delayed an entire week for clean up.
To say that my kiddo had an adventure is somewhat of an understatement, but she came home in great spirits and had no clue what was going on beyond the camp. I am just grateful to everyone at the camp making sure that the girls were well taken care of and putting their needs first. We are definitely looking forward to camp again in 2017!
